For many, one of the best kept parish secrets is the fact that we have a cemetery operated by the parish. It is located at 290 Grove Street on the Dedham/West Roxbury line. Over the past few months, much work has been done to the upkeep of the cemetery grounds. A new landscaper has been hired to keep up with the overall maintenance of the cemetery. Also, a new foreman has been hired to oversee and (for lack of a better term) dig the graves. These new individuals will bring a greater concentration of our efforts for the care of the cemetery. I recently read:
“The Catholic Cemetery bears witness to the fundamental beliefs of our faith. It is consecrated ground. The mortal remains of the dead are interred with reverence, in expectation of the Resurrection of the body and the eternal life in Heaven. The word cemetery itself means “sleeping place,” for the dead are very much alive to God. A Catholic Parish Cemetery, such as Saint Mary’s, is an extension of the Parish life, a bridge between this world and the next. The prayers of the living, joined to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered on the altar of the Parish Church, come to the aid of the faithful departed, while the faithful departed come to the aid of the living in the manner which God allows through the Communion of Saints. The Catholic Cemetery is a place of consolation and hope.”
In the coming weeks more work will be done to the cemetery, in the hope that we are respectful to our beloved dead. Also, plots are available. If you would like more information on the cemetery, please contact Rich Killgoar at 781.326.0550, ext. 132.
