“I am the Good Shepherd . . .” Jesus demonstrates to us that the shepherd tends to the flock as an act of love and concern, whereas, the hired hand is there only for personal reward and temporal gain. At the sight of difficulty or personal danger, the hired hand would abandon all responsibility so as to preserve his own well-being. That is, bad shepherds tend to be lax in looking after their flock, because their heart is filled with other interests. The good shepherd, however, goes ahead of the flock, opening up the path by his very example. This shepherd clearly remains and defends the flock at all costs even to the point of death, as Christ has done. Christ calls all of us to be good shepherds by following His example. Whether we are at home, school, work, or play, we are called to lead others with love and humility. This role of shepherd is one that we are not always readily willing to take on, but Jesus asks us to be good examples for others. Even examples of faith that will inspire others. Are you able and willing to be a shepherd? Jesus will provide you with on-the-job training if you so desire to follow in His footsteps. Accept His call today and be a shepherd after His own heart. In other words, help lead others by word and example to Christ.
