In today’s Gospel, Jesus points back to the Old Testament story in which the people grumbled against God and Moses. God then sent serpents who bit the people and poisoned them. The people then pleaded with Moses for relief. God then instructed Moses to cast a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. Once those afflicted with the poison looked upon the bronze serpent, they were healed. This Jesus connects to His being on the Cross and how that would lead to the healing of souls wounded by sin. We must make every effort to constantly keep our eyes fixed on Christ. As we look upon Him, we also experience the healing of our souls. I encourage each of you in these final weeks of Lent to spend time in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel (St. Joseph’s Chapel); it is there that you can look upon Christ, the Crucified One. The Cross and the Eucharist are so intimately connected. Pope Benedict XVI commented:
“Let us fix our gaze on the Crucified One, let us pause more often in adoration before the Eucharist to let our life enter the love of God who humbly lowered Himself in order to lift us up to Him.”
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
