In the Gospel this weekend, we hear of a parable that contains seed that is sown and the ground in which it is received. Think for a moment of the different surfaces that the seed fell upon in Jesus’ Parable of the Sower. Recall, that some fell on a path, other seed fell on rocky ground, still some of it fell among thorns, but at last some of the seed fell on rich soil. It was on this rich, fertile, and good soil that fruit was produced abundantly. God’s Word will produce the greatest amount of fruit in our lives when and only when that very Word takes root in the rich, fertile, and good soil of our hearts. So let’s examine ways in which we can ensure that the soil of our hearts will be receptive to the Word of God. Primarily, the Holy Mass and the reception of the Sacraments will keep the soil of our hearts fertile and rich. Reading the Bible daily and reflecting on the words we read is also a good way to enrich that soil. Prayer before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament is necessary. Watching spiritually rich programming will keep our minds pure. Reciting the Rosary, the Angelus, the Stations of the Cross, and Grace before and after meals are all important. These are just a few ways that you can help keep the soil rich, fertile, and good so that the fruit produced in you will be one hundred fold.
