In the Gospel today, Jesus uses the imagery of salt. We know that salt is good for seasoning, enhancing, and preserving foods. We, also, know that if salt loses the very essence of what makes it salt, it is worthless. It is important to note that Jesus was speaking directly to the disciples, but He is speaking to us, as well. We are salt. If we lose the “essence” of what makes us who we are, we cease to be. Truly, our identity as a child of God never ceases to be. However, it is precisely, our identity as a Christian or disciple of Christ that can become lost or distorted. Jesus was warning His disciples to hold onto the qualities that made them His followers. What does it mean for us to be a follower of Jesus? At its very core, we need to embody the Gospel. Knowing Christ is the essence of the Christian way of life. Jesus seasons and enhances our lives, let us preserve that relationship through the Eucharist, Confession, Adoration, and prayer.
