The power of the voice of Christ must have been remarkable. His words must have carried such authority. Just hearing Jesus speak and offer an invitation to come and follow Him was enough for the disciples to leave everything behind. St. Paul reminds us that, “Faith comes from what is heard” (Rom 10:17). They heard the voice of Jesus and immediately established a relationship with Him.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once stated: “It is characteristic of faith that it comes from hearing, that it is the reception of something that I have not thought out, so that in the last analysis thinking in the context of faith is always a thinking over of something previously heard and received.”
The first disciples heard the voice of Jesus and once they received His Word they responded accordingly. Today, listen to that same voice that transformed the life of those early fishermen, and like them, act accordingly. His advice to us as we respond is not to be afraid.
