In the very opening line of the Gospel this weekend, Christ challenges us to show love to our enemies and repay those who wish us harm with acts of mercy and forgiveness. Wow! This truly is a moment in which Christ is calling us to go beyond what people may expect of us and to consider what God would expect from us. We are often moved to revenge, anger, or retaliation when confronted by our enemies and those who hate us. Yet, today Christ is telling us no, rather, He is commanding us to love. Again listen to His words: “love your enemies . . . pray for those who mistreat you . . . give and don’t demand it back . . . lend expecting nothing in return . . . stop judging . . . forgive. In other words, He is asking us to go the extra distance in our dealings with others. When we do so, we give them an opportunity to have an encounter with our merciful and loving God via our actions. Think about that for a minute. When we show mercy and love to others they encounter the love and mercy of God. Going the extra mile can make a huge difference in others’ lives and in our lives as well. So, do what Christ tells you today and make a difference in a world so marred by violence, hatred, and anger.
