The Gospel this weekend speaks to us about commitment in our vocation. In the Sacraments of Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders, as well as those who are consecrated religious or virgins, there is always a spouse. Within Holy Marriage, it is obviously a husband or wife. In Holy Orders, it is the Church. Those living a consecrated life take Jesus as their Spouse. Those discerning their state in life, their vocation, must have a certain openness to God, who has one simple desire ~ God wants to draw you into a deeper relationship with Himself. God’s plan for all vocations is that we learn to perfect our ability to love and receive love. He designed each vocation to prepare our hearts in a specific way to live eternally in His divine love. The bottom line is that our primary vocation is to be a child of God. We must discern the secondary vocation God desires for us. St. Josemaria reminds us: “Jesus came to reveal the universal love of God to us. God loves all . . . wants all to love Him – everyone, whatever the personal situation, social position, work. Ordinary life is something of great value. All the ways of the earth can be an opportunity to meet Christ.”
