As we continue to reflect on how we can “increase our faith,” by considering the spiritual programs offered here at St. Mary’s, let us explore Sung Vespers which takes place each Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm in the St. Joseph Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
Last Sunday, the Gospel reminded us of the necessity of prayer and the importance of “praying without ceasing.” Our greatest prayer is the Liturgy of the Eucharist ~ The Holy Mass. Second to the Holy Mass is the Liturgy of the Hours ~ the Divine Office. The Church encourages all Catholics to pray according to this ancient tradition. The prayers in the Liturgy of the Hours are rooted in the Psalms and have Scriptural readings and intercessory prayers.
The Second Vatican Council reminds us: “By tradition going back to early Christian times, the divine office is devised so that the whole course of the day and night is made holy by the praises of God. Therefore, when this wonderful song of praise is rightly performed by priests … or by the faithful praying together … then it is truly the voice of the bride addressed to her Bridegroom; It is the very prayer which Christ Himself, together with His Body, addresses to the Father.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 84)
Please come and join us for prayer Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Fr. Wayne
