At a special Mass of Thanksgiving here at St. Mary’s in honor of St. Josemaria, Bishop Reed made a statement that has stayed with me. He said in his homily that many people who don’t understand the importance of faith, think that we go to Church or that we pray in order to escape from reality. But he reminded us that it is precisely in Mass and in prayer that we encounter reality. I have reflected on these words for several days now. Each day I come to a deeper appreciation of them. It is exactly the reason we come to Church and that we enter into prayer ~ so that we may encounter Christ. So the next time you are asked “Why do you go to Church?” or “Why are you praying?” you can simply respond ~ “I need a reality check ~ even if it’s for a minute!”
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Fr. Wayne
