The readings today collectively speak about two worlds. The physical world of humanity and the spiritual world of the Kingdom. We are asked to reflect on where our allegiance is located. In the first reading, we pause to see if we trust in the human world or trust in the Kingdom as manifest in the Lord. The Psalm along with the second reading demonstrates the life of blessedness and what awaits those who follow, hope and trust in the Lord. Then the Gospel, with the Beatitudes, asks us in a direct manner to focus on which world our heart belongs. We see the contrast of the two worlds:
“Blessed are you who are poor, (in this world)
for the kingdom of God is yours. (in the Kingdom)
Blessed are you who are now hungry, (in this world)
for you will be satisfied. (in the Kingdom)
Blessed are you who are now weeping, (in this world)
for you will laugh. (in the Kingdom)
Blessed are you when people hate you, (in this world)
and when they exclude and insult you, (in this world)
and denounce your name as evil (in this world)
on account of the Son of Man.
Rejoice – leap for joy on that day! (in the Kingdom)
Behold, your reward will be great in heaven.”
So, ask yourself today, where do I belong? What is most important to me? Where is my heart?
Yours in Christ,
