As we enter into this Second Sunday of Advent, the Gospel of St. Mark begins by reiterating the prophetic words of Isaiah: “Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.” Isaiah was speaking prophetically of St. John the Baptist. So what was the voice of St. John actually crying out? He was proclaiming the Good News that the Messiah, the Christ was among the people. This was the long awaited event ~ salvation was at hand, God was/is with His children! It was St. John who called for the people to prepare the way for the Lord into their lives. It is St. John who now calls each and every one of us to prepare the way for the Lord into our lives. How is that preparation going? Slowly but surely Christmas decorations will be going up all around us. We are indeed getting closer to the day of the Lord’s birth. But let us not only prepare for that one day; let us prepare earnestly for His Second Coming among us; let us prepare worthily for His coming to us in the Holy Mass. Each of these moments calls for readiness and preparation. Heed St. John’s call and prepare today a pathway for the Lord.
