“Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury.
For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.”
The Sacred Scriptures continue to provide extraordinary examples of those who reveal to us the manner by which we are to embrace Christ. Over the past weeks, James and John showed us that we need to be bold and daring; Bartimaeus showed us to be confident and trusting; the widows of the readings today (First Reading & Gospel) show us to be sacrificial and self-giving. They counter balance the young man of the Gospel several weeks ago who just could not detach himself from his possessions. Jesus told him to sell all his possessions and then come and follow Him. The young man went away sad for he had many possessions we are told. Yet, the widows of the readings today, give all they had first for Elijah then for Christ. We are called to do the same. In your relationship with Christ and others ~ hold nothing back! Give your all!
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Wayne
